TYPES OF MASONRY
Stone Masonry
The construction of stones bonded together with mortar is termed as stone masonry where stones are available in an abundance in nature, on cutting and dressing to the proper shape, they provide an economical material for the construction of various building components such as walls, columns, footings, arches, lintels, beams, etc.
RUBBLE MASONRY
The stones used are either undressed or roughly dressed having wider joints. This can be further subdivided as uncoursed, random, dry, polygonal and bint.
ASHLAR MASONRY
Masonry is built from accurately dressed stones with uniform and fine joints of about 3mm thickness by arranging the stone blocks in various patterns.
Brick Masonry
When bricks are laid in mortar in a proper systematic manner, they form a homogeneous mass, which can withstand forces without disintegration. This mass of the structure, so made by the use of bricks is called "Brick Masonry" or simply "Brickwork".
Block Masonry
This type of masonry is made up of Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU). CMU is a standard size rectangular block used in building construction. Concrete blocks are made from cast concrete (e.g. Portland cement and aggregate)
Veneer Masonry
Masonry veneer walls consist of a single non-structural external layer of masonry, typically made of brick, stone or manufactured stone. Masonry veneers are absorbent, and water can migrate through to the cavity where it will drain down the back of the veneer. Because significant amounts of water can be transferred in this way, masonry veneers are known as wet cavity systems.
Gabion Masonry
A gabion is a cage, cylinder or box filled with rocks, concrete, sand or soil. Numerous kind of types of gabions is constructed and used in different engineering constructions. Therefore, it is a partially flexible block construction used for slope stability and erosion protection in construction.
Composite Masonry
When walls are constructed with two or more types of building materials it is term as composite masonry.
Reinforced Masonry
Reinforced brickwork is the one in which the brick masonry is strengthened by the provision of mild steel bars, hoop iron, an expanded mess.
Bagged Concrete Masonry
The bagged brick system can be easily applied as a single thick coat over a variety of masonry backgrounds including new or old brick, concrete blocks, or in-situ concrete surfaces. Bagging provides an economical way of smoothing and closing the open lineal nature of bricks to provide an attractive rustic feel to the exterior envelope of any dwelling before painting.
